Richard Obeng, coach of the Black Challenge team, has openly responded to demands from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif that the team must render an account of donations received from former President John Mahama and other people.
Speaking on Akoma FM in an interview monitored by InsiderGH.com, coach Obeng detailed the team’s expenditures and highlighted the critical support the donations provided.
He further indicated that they have already spent the money received from Former President John Dramami Mahama and other donors but are ready to render an account of how the donations were used.
“We have already shared the money we received from the donations. After we returned, we were together as a team in Accra without any support,” Obeng stated.
He explained that the donations were essential for covering basic needs during a period when the team received no logistical support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“We used the money for our upkeep, hotel bills, and transportation to our homes. After they gave us tickets, we never received any logistics. We depended on donors for our upkeep.”
“We will do the accounts for them by stating what we used the money for because the money has already been shared for our upkeep,” he said.
Background
The Black Challenge came from a goal down to beat Morocco 2-1 in the final of the 2024 Amputee Africa Cup of Nations (AAFCON) in Egypt.
The team has since paid courtesy calls on some personalities including former president John Dramani Mahama, who donated $10,000 to the team.
On Friday, when the team went to the Sports Ministry to present the trophy to the sector minister, he expressed disgust at the visits by the Black Challenge.
The Minister has, as a result, charged the President of the National Paralympic Committee to account for every penny received in donations to the team.
