The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, has mocked the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Prof. Asiedu claimed that some NPP supporters jest about Chairman Wontumi needing an interpreter to grasp the English used by Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang during her introduction at UPSA.
Speaking on Accra-based Onua FM with Nana Yaa Brefo, Prof. Asiedu stated, “If you look at the kind of English that was spoken by our mother, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, at UPSA during her unveiling, I wonder how Chairman Wontumi would understand.”
“Even some NPP sympathizers are saying that Chairman Wontumi would need an interpreter to make him understand the kind of English that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang used. Because the kind of English she used was tough, and when Chairman Wontumi reads it, maybe he might not read it well and it might sound different to him.”
“And you are telling me to go and argue; at this tangent with Chairman Wontumi, he doesn’t understand this, so he’s quite funny.”
In a related development, he disclosed his unwavering focus during the Assin North by-elections in 2023, explaining why he refused to be diverted by allegations and insults hurled by Chairman Wontumi.
As the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Prof. Asiedu shared in an interview on Onua FM, monitored by InsiderGH.com, that despite numerous requests from media outlets to respond to Chairman Wontumi’s accusations, he opted to remain silent.
During the Assin North election, Chairman Wontumi leveled several allegations against Prof. Asiedu and frequently mentioned his name in public forums.
However, Prof. Asiedu chose not to engage in any verbal sparring, focusing on securing victory for the NDC in Assin North.
Recalling the campaign, Prof. Asiedu remembered receiving calls on the final day urging him to confront Chairman Wontumi.
Nevertheless, he resisted the temptation, aware that such exchanges could descend into derogatory discourse.
Instead, Prof. Asiedu maintained his calm and concentrated on the task at hand – ensuring success in the Assin North election.
Ultimately, his unwavering focus and dedication contributed to the NDC’s triumph in the by-election.
